Japanese Instruments

There are a variety of instruments that were used in Japan.

The Shakuhachi, an end blown flute, is probably the most commonly associated with Japan.

The Koto is a long stringed instrument that is layed horizontally and plucked.

The Biwa is a short necked, four stringed lute that has been used for quite some time.

The Shamisen is a long necked, three stringed lute that compliments the Biwa.

Taiko are the most popular in Japan today. These large drums were played to support an ensemble or with a Taiko group. Today, the Taiko groups are very prominent.
